Lupita Nyong’o: Your Dreams Are Valid
Beautiful words from a beautiful young woman. Lupita Nyong’o, Academy Awards winner for her role in “12 Years a Slave” spoke a very big message using very few words.
Your dreams are valid.
Her words spoke to me, just as they did to so many women listening to her speech. Like many of you, I've seen my fair share of obstacles, facing circumstances that threatened to crush my dream.
From a young age, I wanted to become a doctor. But at the age of 16, just when I was starting to seriously consider which college to go to, I became pregnant. In a moment, it seemed my dream would never come true.
Self-doubt, insecurity, and uncertainty about myself, my abilities and yes, about my dream to become a doctor overwhelmed me. Could I do it? Could I raise a child AND earn my degree?
In spite of my doubts, I set out on a journey to be both a mother AND a med-school student.
Along the way there were those who fed my doubt and insecurity, suggesting that I should quit school when things got really tough. And in those moments, I doubted, not only my abilities, but that my dream was valid.
When I heard Lupita speak those words, all these years later, now that I AM a doctor, I'm filled with joy. Joy that so many young women heard her words. Joy that what she said was packed with powerful truth! And joy that I can look back on my own journey and say that MY dream was valid! And now, I can echo Lupita's words as I write this to YOU ...
YOUR DREAMS ARE VALID!
